USAGE GUIDE

Using GnuPG easily with WinPT (Windows Privacy Tray) taskbar front-end

This presumes that:

  1. WinPT and GnuPG have been loaded and configured for you ( Installation Guide).
  2. Public/Private keys have been loaded ( Implementation Guide).
  3. WinPT is available in the System Tray (as part of the Start Menu process).
  4. You need to exchange email containing sensitive or protected information. ( Personal and Corporate E-mail Encryption).

SENDING

  1. Fill out the email form just like normal (including multiple send-to entries, if needed).
  2. Type, Copy/Cut/Paste, or insert the body text as needed (but no attachments yet).
  3. Be sure the cursor is in the body portion of the email and is the "current window."
  4. To sign the email (if you wish to prove you were the sender):
    1. Use the Hot Key combination Shift/Alt/s. WinPT will copy the current window to the clipboard and will list the Private keys available to sign the text.
    2. Pick the key.
    3. Click on OK
    4. Enter the pass-phrase for the private key and either hit the Enter key or press OK.
    5. Click on OK when the message box pops up.
  5. To encrypt the email (so only the recipient(s) can read it):
    1. Use the Hot Key combination Shift/Alt/s. At this point WinPT will copy the current window to the clipboard and will list the Public keys available to encrypt the data.
    2. Pick one or more (hold the Ctrl key while clicking additional entries) destination keys to encrypt the text.
    3. Click on OK. GnuPG will encrypt the message for each destination key picked.
    4. Click on OK when the message box pops up. The encrypted message will be pasted back into the "current window."
  6. Now insert any attachments after the encrypted text.
  7. Click on Send.

RECEIVING

  1. Once email is in your INBOX, open it.
  2. Save any attachments otherwise they will be lost during decryption.
  3. Be sure the cursor is in the body portion of the email and is the "current window."
  4. Use the Hot Key combination Shift/Alt/d to decrypt the current window. At this point WinPT will copy the window to the clipboard and prompt for the pass-phrase for your private key.
  5. Enter the pass-phrase for your private key (don't forget it or nobody will be able to extract the message). The pass-phrase should be something easy to remember but hard to guess. The person administering the corporate Public/Private keys should have set this up for you (Implementation Guide).
  6. Read the decrypted message that has been pasted back to the "current window."
  7. Remember the attachments that were saved earlier (if you forgot, then do not save the changes when closing this message - you can re-select and follow these steps again.)

NOT EMAIL?

The "current window" does not have to be the text portion of an email. A word document or any other item that can be copied to the clipboard can be encrypted or decrypted via the Hot-Keys.

HOT-KEYS

WinPT uses the following Windows Hot-Keys: Shift/Alt/e Encrypt the current window Shift/Alt/d Decrypt or verify signature in current window Shift/Alt/s Sign (plain text) the current window Ctrl/Alt/e Encrypt the contents of the clipboard Ctrl/Alt/d Decrypt or verify signature in the clipboard Ctrl/Alt/s Sign (plain text) the clipboard (I'm unable to make it work)
