INSTALLATION and SETUP GUIDE

Using GnuPG easily with WinPT (Windows Privacy Tray) taskbar front-end

  1. Read the companion Implementation Guide. You will need to decide where your public and secure keys will be stored.
  2. Download the WinPT Graphical installer package (includes the GnuPG encryption software) from www.winpt.org/download.html (currently version 0.4.0). Save this program to a temporary spot on your hard drive.
  3. Run the installation program (e.g., winpt-0.4.0-installer.exe) to install both the WinPT and GnuPG software. Accept the default install location and start menu folder. Finish the install answering any other questions.
  4. Start WinPT from the Start Menu folder created in step 3 and click OK to generate keys.
  5. If the keys are going to be kept on a local server so that multiple people can encrypt and decrypt using the same set of keys, then continue with this step at 5A; otherwise, skip to step 6.
    1. Click on END (without filling anything out or generating any keys).
    2. Right click on the WinPT Icon in the System Tray and select Preferences from the pop-up menu. The WinPT Preferences menu will pop-up.
    3. Click on GPG Prefs.
    4. Change the GnuGP home Directory field to be the location where the keys are to be located.
NOTE:  The following files will be located there (some may not appear immediately):
      options - GnuPG options file
pubring.gpg - public key ring where all public keys are stored
random_seed - random seed file for generating keys (don't modify)
secring.gpg - secure key rings where all private keys are stored
trustdb.gpg - notations on your level of trust for the public keys
    5. Click on Save, OK, Cancel followed by OK.
  6. If you need to generate one or more keys, then continue with this step at 6A; otherwise, skip to step 7.
    1. Right click on the WinPT Icon in the system tray and select Keymanager from the pop-up menu. The WinPT Key management window will pop up.
    2. Click on Key and then Generate from the drop down menu. The WinPT Keygeneration menu will pop up.
    3. Fill out the form (we suggest using a subkey length of 2048 bits and use an appropriate company/unit name rather than a personal name). Remember the passphrase!
    4. Click on Start and wait until the GnuPG status window pops up with Keygeneration finished. Click OK.
    5. Click on END when finished generating keys (usually one is enough unless generating for a number of units within the company).
    6. Close the WinPT Key management window.
  7. Follow these steps to put WinPT in the Startup Menu so it will always be in the system tray after logging in:
    1. Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).
    2. Locate and open the folder containing WinPT (if in default area it will be in C:\Program Files\WinPT).
    3. Locate but do not open the Startup folder (look under your Profile in ..\Start Menu\Programs).
    4. Click and drag WinPT from the opened folder to the Startup folder. This will create a shortcut in the Startup folder that will invoke WinPT when you log in.
